Bird life in October - poems

HAIKU
cardinal
'chits' from the far end
of the porch
~~~
robin
at the birdbath
but only for a drink
~~~

mockingbird
chasing a robin
from the birdbath
~~~
red-headed woodpecker--
its morning drink
where I can see
~~~

TANKA
bluejay
squawking
from a beautyberry limb--
   calling kin to water
   or warning foes away?

Ambience of autumn - poems

scenic moountain road
the pines' understory
all colors of fall
~~~~
unlawful
to blow leaves into the street
what about the wind?
~~~~

male cardinal
feasting on beautyberries--
windy autumn day
~~~~
Acorns
fall and windchimes
play. The cats chase oak leaves
skittering across the porch, and
acorns.
~~~~

An oak
leaf falls, is caught
in the mini-rose bush.
Two pots of pansies finally come
alive.
~~~~
Two crows
carp at something
near the pecan tree, which
reminds me: gather the fallen
pecans.
~~~~

Three crows
span the roadway
this early fall morning.
Whatever do they hope to prove
by this?

A poetic bow to the birds

CINQUAIN

Bright blue
wings flutter from
wire to the greening grass.
It's rare to see a bluebird, so
I watch.
~~~
HAIKU
male cardinal bathes
in the fresh water ... three ... four
sparrows join him
~~~

CINQUAIN

Between
the noise of cars,
I hear a woodpecker,
spring peepers and a gentle wind-
chime tone.
~~~
CINQUAIN
Mocker
at the birdbath;
flies two feet to the bush
of beautyberries. Inside, my
nose drips.
~~~

HAIKU

college's spring break
only a team of robins
on the baseball field
(published in Haiku Headlines, 2003)
~~~
HAIKU
the flock of blackbirds
down the street just yesterday
now in my backyard
(published in the Premier edition of Hermitage [Romania] 2004)
Aaaaah! December with all its poem prompts
SENRYU
eager
to take down autumn's decor
and get to Christmas
~~~

CINQUAIN
"A Warm December 2nd"

I gild
gourds and paint two
boards, repot oxalis,
mums, then nail roof tacks to secure
the screens.
~~~
LIMERICK
There once was a writer named Rhon
Whose sentences never ran on.
The harder she'd trot,
The behinder she got,
But call her a sluggard? non non
~~~

CINQUAIN
"Enigma"

With all
the rain, you'd think
window-sill, under-eave
plants would be wet. But they all look
thirsty.
~~~
HAIKU
snow still falling
but only from the trees
a lone cardinal
~~~

HAIKU

one of the new cats
steps gingerly
the snowy grass
~~~
